ATM Adapter Configuration at the ICSI
Currently we are using
Fore SBA-200E
and
Interphase 4615
ATM Adapter with 155Mbit/s Multimode Fiber Interfacee (SC-connector). As our workstations are connected to the BAGNet and MAY network which are both pvc (permanent virtual channel) based networks, we also use pvcs for the local interconnection of our workstations. IP packets are encapsulated using the LLC/SNAP encapsulation method (RFC1483).
Usually network configuration can only be done with root permission, but as our network is an experimental one the group ownership of all needed commands is changed to atmdevel and the set-user-ID bit is set, so all members of this group can change the configuration. Some of the special commands are copied to the /etc/local directory because this is a workstation local directory.
Setting up a New ATM Adapter
To setup a new adapter the following steps must be performed as root:
- Install the driver software of the ATM adapter
- copy ifconfig in the /etc/local directory
- copy route in the /etc/local directory
- change the group ownership to atmdevel of these commands and set the set-user-ID flag.
- change the group ownership of the following commands to atmdevel and set the set-user-ID flag.
- in case of a Interphase adapter: /bin/pvcarp and /bin/arp
- in case of a Fore adapter: /bin/atmarp
- add the following to the /etc/local/rc.HOSTNAME:
- /n/tuna/da/tenet/MAY/atm_adapter_config/setup_pvcs_HOSTNAME
- in case of a Fore adapter: ifconfig qaa0 ATM_HOSTNAME netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast + up
- in case of a Interphase adapter: ifconfig pa0 ATM_HOSTNAME netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast + up
PVC Setup and Check
Each adapter has a special command and parameters to setup a pvc. The local interconnection is usually automatically setup during reboot, so only additional connections have to be set up ore dropped. For more Information about these and other commands look at the
manual pages. In which workstation which adapter is installed can be found in the
ICSI Host Configuration Table.
- Fore Adapter:
- atmarp -c HOST qaa0 0 VCI 0 PEAK
This command sets up a new pvc to the destination HOST with the virtual channel identifier VCI and the peak bitrate PEAK in kbit/s (traffic shaping).
- atmarp -r HOST
This command removes the pvc to the destination HOST from the ATM arp table.
- atmarp -a
This command displays all currently setup connections.
- Interphase Adapter:
- pvcarp -s HOST VCI PEAK
This command sets up a new pvc to the destination HOST with the virtual channel identifier VCI and the peak bitrate PEAK in Mbit/s (traffic shaping).
- pvcarp -d HOST
This command removes the pvc to the destination HOST from the ATM arp table.
- pvcarp -a
This command displays all currently setup connections.
