Final Requirements
The final set of requirements, as derived from the architects and
examples, were as follows:
- The pattern should look random, but not too random.
- There should be at most 50 unique stones.
- The stones should be roughly the same size (about 2 square feet).
- Angles should not be too acute.
- All the stones may be convex.
In addition to these requirements, there were also a few specified
tolerances and aesthetic comments:
- Since the stones fit together with 3/8" grout, there is some space
between stones for inexact fits.
- The accuracy of the cutting process is not known exactly. It is
expected that some cutting will have to be done on-site to correct
miscut stones.
- Four stones meeting at a corner should be avoided.
- Very small edges are difficult to cut, and should be avoided.
Obviously, these requirements are not explicit enough to provide a
design specification. Rather, they formed the starting point from
which I generated trials. By presenting many examples, we were able to
narrow down the possibilities.
