Oliver Rübel

Dr Rübel is a Staff Scientist in the area of Computational Biosciences and Machine Learning and Analytics at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He received his Ph.D. in 2009 from the Department of Computer Science of the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany. Dr. Rübel’s research to date has focused on the intersection of visualization, machine learning, and data management for large-scale and high-dimensional data, with a particular focus on (a) machine learning, visualization, and analytics algorithms and methods for large-scale, high-dimensional, and multi-modal data, (b) data modeling and management for efficient data sharing and integration, and (c) data and analysis systems to enable data sharing, reuse, and analysis. As part of his research he had the opportunity to closely collaborate with a wide range of application sciences — including, gene expression, metabolomics, particle physics, finance, neuroscience, and climate. Dr Rübel has contributed to and led the design, implementation, and development of publicly available and well-recognized visualization and analysis applications, including NWB, HDMF, PointCloudXplore, and OpenMSI among many others. He received two prestigious R&D 100 Award; in 2015 for the development of OpenMSI and in 2019 for the development of NWB. Dr. Rübel has contributed to more than 63 peer-reviewed publications in high-ranking journals and conferences and more than 160 other publications in the form of posters, technical reports, theses, and presentations.
