ICSI Speech FAQ:
2.1 What is speech recognition?

Answer by: dpwe - 2000-07-22

Speech recognition is the ability of machines to respond intelligently to speech. However, it is usually used to refer to dictation, the ability of machines to transcribe the lexical content of speech.

This is a lame answer. It's main purpose is to demonstrate (and test!) the ability of the Speech FAQ system to handle multiple answers to a single question. For a better response, see the alternative answer pointing to the comp.speech FAQ.
