a) Consider a one-dimensional (i.e., one input) competitive learning problem involving two units arranged in a WTA fashion). Assume that the inputs arise from two uniformly distributed clusters in the intervals [-0.8,-1.2] and [0.8,1.2], respectively. What choice of initial weights will facilitate learning in this situation? What choice of initial weights might preclude learning?

b) In competitive learning it is possible that certain units are never selected for weight-update during training. Propose two heuristics for avoiding underutilization of units.
